Digging in Israel
1:30 – 2:30 pm
Saul Brodsky Jewish Community Library, Kopolow Building
Diane Everman shares finds and stories from her participation in the 2011 excavation of a biblical town in Israel's picturesque Negev desert. Khirbet Summeily is small biblical period village (10th-8th century BCE) located in the northern part of Israel's picturesque Negev desert. During the 2011 excavation season, we uncovered several houses, figurines and other objects, which tell us about the daily life of the people of biblical Judah, in the days of the kings who followed David and Solomon. One of our main research questions has to do with the location of the site, as Summeily is on the border between Judah and the land of the Philistines. How then did this border village interact with two great powers that were often at war with each other? What did the evidence from the 2011 season reveal and what do we hope to find in the upcoming 2012 season?

Movie: Complaints of a Dutiful Daughter
7:00-8:30 pm
Jewish Federation, Kopolow Building
“Complaints of a Dutiful Daughter” is a film by Deborah Hoffman that chronicles the various stages of her mother’s Alzheimer’s disease and the evolution of the daughter’s response to the illness. With profound insight and a healthy dose of humor, this film is much more than a story about Alzheimers and family care giving. It is ultimately a life-affirming exploration of family relations, aging and change, the meaning of memory, and love. Discussion following film led by Marcia Mermelstein, MSW, Senior Adult Information and Referral Specialist with Elderlink St. Louis.

Tales of the Great Jewish Mystics
10:30 am – 12:00 pm
Staenberg Family Complex, Arts & Education Building
There is a substantial body of Jewish mystical tales that constitute the legendary dimension of the Jewish mystical tradition. They accompany and in many ways complement a body of mystical teachings that can broadly be defined as "kabbalistic". These tales cover a range of mystical experiences, not only of mystical union but of visions, dreams, soul travel, encounters with angels and demons, possession by both good and evil spirits, miracles and experiences out of body and out of time. Howard Schwartz will draw from his book Gabriel’s Palace: Jewish Mystical Tales.
